U.S. Hispanic Christian population in decline

First up we have a new study by Pew Research which has surveyed over 3000 U.S. Hispanic adults, and the results suggest that religious affiliation continues to decline, which is consistent with other American subpopulations. Interestingly, the study found that while Catholicism is the largest faith for Hispanic Americans, it is also the fastest decreasing faith. Protestantism remains somewhat stable according to the data. Part of this is because many Hispanic people are switching their faith from Catholic to Protestant. You can read more about what this means for Hispanic populations below. It should be noted that the CGGC has been making consistent efforts of the last decade+ to engage and evangelize Hispanic populations in the United States, and in our mission fields. Reports like this suggest that we still have our work cut out for us, and that the work is as urgent as it’s ever been.

Maui fire survivors worry about the future of the island

The following report was put together by the Hawai’i State Rural Health Association. By surveying 2097 residents of Maui County, and an additional 1,105 people impacted by the fire in Lahaina last year, they give comprehensive picture how the population of Maui feel in the aftermath of the fire. While much progress has been made in the physical clean up of the debris and ashes, the survivors of the fire have serious questions about what the future holds for Maui. For instance, the survey found that 70% of fire survivors are “cutting back on groceries and food for financial reasons”. The CGGC churches helped to raise support for victims in the after math of the fire, but it’s apparent now that there is still a long way to go before Maui has recovered from the disaster last year.
