How do you know if you’re making disciples of Jesus? Who are you discipling and what does that process look like? I think these are questions that we have to come back to, over and over again. We’re creatures of habit and people of routines and it’s easy to go through the motions and lose the main mission in the midst of our habits and routines.
A few days ago, a dear friend of mine sent me a text with a prayer from the Lectio 365 prayer app that read as follows:
Jesus, please give me the names of five people who don’t know You; friends and family I can be a witness to. Every day for the next 11 days, I commit to praying for each one by name.
Three names came to mind almost immediately, and two other names followed shortly after as I pondered the question from the prayer. Jesus has placed me in proximity with these five individuals. He loves them, they just don’t know it yet. I have opportunities to interact with them on a fairly regular basis. Some of my disciple making work is bearing witness to these friends as we walk through life together. I’m praying for them and intentionally seeking opportunities to help them understand the hope that I’ve found in Jesus.
What about you? Who are five people in your life who don’t know Jesus? A neighbor? A coworker? A teammate? The barista at your favorite coffee shop? Who are the people you encounter on a regular basis who don’t know Jesus yet, but God has placed you in their lives so that you can pray for them and bear witness to them? This is where disciple making starts.
Sometimes we probably make things too complicated or difficult. You might be saying, “I want to make disciples, I know I’m supposed to make disciples, but I don’t know where to start!” Start here: who are five people in your life who don’t know Jesus? Do you have five names? For some readers, you’ll easily come up with five names, ten names, or even more. For others, this may be a bit of a challenge. If you don’t have five names of folks who don’t know Jesus, it’s going to be hard to make disciples. What do you need to do to begin to place yourself in proximity with folks who don’t know Jesus? Where are your opportunities to connect with folks who don’t know Jesus yet, but need to know Him?
How are you doing in making disciples? Do you know where to start?
Christ’s Peace,
Lance
