We just couldn't resist having a special Valentine's day post.
Many of you know Pastor Dave Green who works in our office as a manager and who he keeps all of us afloat. As a Pastor, Dave has served in multiple regions across the CGGC, including as the Great Lakes Conference Executive Director. But you might not know that Dave met his wife Sally at the summer seminar (what would eventually become IMPACT), a CGGC youth convention, nearly 62 years ago!
Which means that Dave and Sally are truly a CGGC love story. And on this special occasion, we've asked Sally to tell us about how they met and fell in love. Take it away, Sally!
It was 1963, the first year that the youth of the Churches of God had been included in the Summer Seminar sessions on the University of Findlay campus. It was a great week of fellowship with other teens from across our denomination. The events had been orchestrated by the energetic Pastor Larry White, the youth director of the Churches of God at that time. Due to that week, Larry became a lifelong friend of ours.
There were probably around 50 teens there that week and we all stayed in the girls' dorm, Lovett Hall. The dorm was divided in 2 areas, so it was convenient for the boys to stay in one side and the girls on the other. There was a large lounge area separating the 2 areas with couches, chairs, and a piano.
I distinctly remember coming down the steps on the girls' side, pausing and just looking at that crowd of teens relaxing there. There was a guy from Missouri playing the piano and a group of kids singing around him. I stood there and thought, “Hmmm that's the kind of guy I'd like to marry!”
Three weeks later, Dave arrived on campus as a freshman from Missouri and I arrived as a freshman from Indiana. When I saw him, I was of course surprised to see him, and I thought, “there's that kid from Missouri!”
The rest is history. We were married after our junior year in college. Thankfully, we both had strong Christian families which were actively involved in the Churches of God. Dave was from the Leadwood Church of God in Missouri and I was from the Collamer Church of God in Indiana.
We will celebrate our 59th wedding anniversary this June. We've been blessed with a son and a daughter and 4 grandchildren. We truly have much for which to be thankful. Thank you, Lord!
Dave and Sally have both been long time members of College First Church of God, and Sally has served faithfully as a committee member of the Churches of God Archives Museum and currently serves as the Vice-Chair.
