A Prayer of Surrender

23Jul

I’m away on vacation this week so today will be much more succinct than normal. Part of my normal devotional rhythm includes the Lectio 365 prayer app produced by the good folks at the 24-7 prayer movement in the UK. If you’re looking for a prayer tool, I highly recommend it.

This week, one of the prayers was particularly impactful to myself and some of the brothers I pray with regularly. It’s a prayer of surrender from the Jesuit Prayer book (taken from Dirty Glory by Pete Greig. For the unabridged version of this prayer, see ‘Litany of Humility’ by Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val, secretary of state to Pope Saint Pius X from the prayer book for Jesuits, 1963).

I hope it blesses you today.

Christ’s Peace,
Lance

O Jesus, Meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others…
From the desire of being consulted…
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the fear of being forgotten…
From the fear of being ridiculed…
From the fear of being wronged…
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, O Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I…
That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be chosen and I set aside…
That others may be praised and I go unnoticed…
That others may be preferred to me in everything…
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become as holy as I should,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
